Picking Cotton

The story of a kid born in Liverpool, England during WWII. He lost his father while still an infant and was grudgingly raised by his mother and her sisters in severe post-war poverty, his childhood was shaped by financial hardship, rigid religious authority, crowded housing, and limited opportunity. His formative experiences at a Catholic primary school marked by harsh discipline, fear-based teaching, and a sense of alienation established his lifelong resistance to authority and intolerance for hypocrisy.

He left school with minimal formal qualifications, but with a strong curiosity and an urge for self-directed learning. Despite feeling socially isolated, constrained by class, religion, and with few prospects, he turned to the Royal Navy as an opportunity to spread his wings
